Key Issues

Independent School Board

- We can all appreciate the time and commitment that goes into managing a town and its school. The duties of town and school management are each vast on their own. An independent school board that manages its own appropriation separate from the Town Council would allow each group of leaders to focus on excelling in their roles. Our people bring tremendous talent and experience to Westlake, and integrating their capabilities would add significant value in furthering the town and school's potential.

- An independent and committed school board equipped with an experienced superintendent will provide more capacity to add depth to school services, facilities, programs and educator retention. To align incentives, the performance objectives should be correlated to the superintendent compensation.

- Further, in addition to developing school services and talented staff members there are structural developments needed. The town has debated and promised changing the portables out for almost a decade. Turning to trusted contractors and partners with reputable past performance will help a) Westlake Academy obtain the permanent structures and building improvements our students deserve, and b) ensure that Westlake's infrastructure is well-prepared for the next 15 years of drastic growth, all while maintaining the same beauty and charm that we are blessed with today.

Transparency

- As residents and taxpayers of Westlake, we deserve to feel valued and respected, which means we should receive healthy communication on town developments. It shouldn't be an archaeological dig to find out how things are going. The Town needs to enhance its information processes to enable useable formats that citizens can read and process with ease.

- All candidates should be required to engage in meet and greets with each of the town neighborhoods. If you run for mayor there should be a debate. The town's professional staff should enable the democratic process and have a pre-established mechanism to aid this. People have the right to see an apples-to-apples comparison.

- Town meetings are critical avenues for residents to stay informed. Any resident should be able to leave the house for a bit and participate without it consuming the day or night. Currently, town meetings often last for hours, where the agenda is flooded with items that never seem to be accomplished. We are essentially excluding parents with young kids from the town process. Council members should be able to read the agenda in advance and post their thoughts for all to see which will speed up the conversation and enable a better dialogue. All meetings should be viewable remotely. These attributes, although they seem to be based on common sense, do not currently exist.

Term Limits

- No officeholder should be able to serve more than 8 years in the town council or as mayor. Over time people get complacent and less motivated. The vitality of a town is based on new people, ideas and its youth.

Troubled Public Improvement
District (Entrada)

- This underperforming town initiative consumes the town agenda and fails to yield timely results. It needs to be reviewed to discern what went wrong so that we may learn and ensure nothing like this happens again.
